What is toughened glass?

What is toughened glass?

Toughened glass is simply what its name describes: glass that has been toughened by the tempering process.

A type of safety glass, toughened glass is created by thermal and chemical treatments thatincrease its strength compared with conventional glazing: known as ‘tempering’. The tempering process creates tension in the inner surface of the glass, and compression on the outer surface, making the overall glass much stronger. The different stresses inherent in the glass mean that if broken it crumbles into small chunks rather than into dangerously sharp shards. These smaller chunks present less of a safety hazard.

Thanks to its enhanced strength and safety properties, toughened glass is used in a variety of applications such as car windows, fridge trays, and shower doors: it’s even a component of bulletproof glass.

The history of toughened glass

Although toughened glass is a relatively recent invention, the effects of the ‘tempering’ process have been known for over 500 years. In the 17th century, Prince Rupert brought some glass objects known as ‘Dutch Tears’ or ‘Prince Rupert’s Drop’ to Britain from Holland. These were created by dripping molten glass into cold water. As the glass cooled, it created a long tadpole-shaped piece of glass which could withstand hammer blows on its larger end. These provoked much curiosity and scientific debate.

In 1874 Francois Barthelemy Alfred Royer de la Bastie perfected a way of creating toughened glass by tempering it in hot oil and grease which led to the development of the modern day tempering process.

How can I tell if my misted windows are broken?

Misting is problem that can affect older types of double glazing over time. Here’s everything you need to know about misted windows and how to solve them.

Misted windows: the causes

When double glazing mists up, it’s generally a sign that the perimeter edge seal has failed. This seal goes around the edge of your window and keeps the space in-between the panes a vacuum. As this seal fails it lets air and moisture into the vacuum, destroying it and causing condensation on the inside of the glazing.

Why misted windows are so bad

Misted windows are bad for a number of reasons. The most obvious problem that misted windows present is a reduced visibility: they restrict how much you can see out of your window. Frustratingly, condensation on the inner side of the panes is practically impossible to remove and this can detract from both their performance and aesthetics.

Misted windows can also further deteriorate the condition of your overall window and it’s frame; particularly if it is made of timber or metal. That’s why solving misted double glazing before it becomes a bigger problem makes sense.

If my windows are misted, are they broken?

The short answer is yes. If your double glazing is showing signs of misting, then it’s broken. The only viable way of fixing a misted window is by completely replacing it, but this isn’t as difficult or as expensive as you may think.

Case study: Commercial windows in London

Although based in Leeds, K Glazing also serve cities, towns and villages across the rest of the UK. Recently a manufacturer recommended us to a company based in London for an exciting commercial project: the biggest installation we’ve undertaken in the history of our business!

The project brief

The project involved installing 196 windows in a block of private flats in West Drayton, London. It was the largest commission that K Glazing has ever undertaken and took our company an amazingly quick 3 weeks to complete.

Specialist acoustic glazing

The London company who commissioned our services wanted to improve the soundproofing properties of the block of flats. Noise pollution is an extensive problem in London, and many properties; both modern and traditional, suffer from excessive external sounds penetrating into the building. This block of flats in particular experienced large amounts of acoustic pollution, day and night.

We were able to help though: K Glazing are experts when it comes to supplying specialist glazing. We recommended that the company install soundproof windows (also known as acoustic glass) to help reduce the impact of noise pollution on the flats. Soundproof windows are a form of double glazing that provides enhanced protection against external acoustics. The client agreed, we got to work and they were overjoyed with the result.
