Everybody seems to be talking about triple glazing. What is it, and is it really worth the investment?

What is triple glazing?

Triple glazing is quite similar in principle to double glazing, but instead of using two panes of glass, triple glazing uses—yep, you guessed it, three panes of glass. These three panes are separated by spacer bars and a toughened central pane. It’s the space between each pane of glass in a triple glazed unit that slows the escape of heat from a building, providing an exceptionally effective means of thermal insulation.

Is triple glazing worth it?

You might think that triple glazing is just a gimmick thought up by greedy salesmen, but you couldn’t be further from the truth. Modern triple glazing can dramatically improve a home’s warmth and also it’s energy efficiency; resulting in massive savings in the cost of your energy bills.

The energy performance of a window is generally measured in U values. These rate the thermal performance of a window (eg. how good the window is at keeping heat in a home) with a low value indicating an energy efficient, thermally retentive window and a high value indicating an inefficient window. Whilst double glazed windows can have average U values of around 1.6 W/m2K, triple glazed windows can achieve impressively low values of around 0.8 W/m2K. As you can see, triple glazing can have very tangible effects on the energy efficiency and thermal performance of a window unit.

Here at K Glazing, we recently installed black windows, doors and fascias in a project in Pontefract, Yorkshire, giving the property a Gothic makeover. The owners of the home in question wanted to complete renovate the front of their home. After conducting a careful survey of the property, we suggested that they replace their windows, doors and fascia.
