Here are K Glazing, we’re based in the charming market town of Pontefract outside Wakefield. We love our town and want to share the top things you need to do if you’re in the area.

Eat liquorice

Love them or hate them, Pontefract cakes are known worldwide and are produced here. Due to the sandy soil around the area, it’s one of the few places where liquorice can be grown. You can’t visit without trying these delicious sweets that made this town famous. A liquorice festival is held every year to celebrate the town’s sweet-loving history.

Visit the castle ruins

Once believed to be the most impressive castle in Yorkshire and with a gruesome history, Pontefract castle is now unfortunately mostly ruined. The castle had a massive dungeon network which can be visited; you can still see where prisoners carved their names into the walls. Built in 1070, it was probably the place where Richard II was murdered as well as being a royalist stronghold during the Civil War. Visit the impressive visitor centre and you’ll be instantly transported back in time.

Try some local produce

Farmer Copley’s is a farm shop, cafe and restaurant all in one. The Moo cafe serves coffee, sandwiches and cake during the day and is transformed into the Beast restaurant by night. The menu changes regularly and is full of regional delights.

Feel lucky at the races

If you fancy a flutter, why not head down to Pontefract racecourse? This thoroughbred horse racing venue is the longest continuous flat racing circuit in Europe, so why not find out if it’s your lucky day? Perfect for a family day out or a girly lunch; there’s fun for everyone.

See the stars

If you’ve always fancied yourself as an astronomer or stargazer, head over to Rosse Observatory. Stargazing evenings are regularly held here and professional astronomers hold talks. Learn all about what the sky has to offer; who knows what you might see?

Get back to nature

If you prefer heading outside in the peace and quiet, visit Frickley Country Park. Originally an old colliery, this park has over seven miles of footpaths and cycleways to get lost in. Home to a variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife; it’s the perfect place for a picnic or a run if you’re feeling energetic.
